Volunteers pack over 57,000 pounds of food at holiday food sort.

On December 21, over 200 dedicated volunteers gathered at Daily Bread Food Bank’s holiday food sort, packing an incredible 57,000 pounds of food. Their hard work will provide vital support to more than one in ten Torontonians who rely on food banks for emergency food access.

The event also welcomed local policymakers included MPP Christine Hogarth; MPP Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure; and MPP Chris Glover. Their participation underscored the urgent need for collective action to fight hunger in our city.

Speaking to the volunteers’ contributions, MPP Christine Hogarth remarked, “Canadians come out to help when people are in need. Not because somebody asked, but because you want to make a difference in your community.”

This year, the spirit of giving is more important than ever. According to the Who’s Hungry 2024 report, Toronto food banks saw 3.49 million client visits this year. This sobering figure highlights the critical role of community support in fighting food insecurity. Reflecting on these numbers, Daily Bread CEO Neil Hetherington said, “These numbers are unacceptable and unsustainable. But we know that when community comes together, great things can happen. This annual Toronto tradition is an incredible opportunity for families to make a difference for neighbours in need.”

As we celebrate the holiday season, let’s remember that hunger doesn’t take a holiday. Together, we can ensure every family has access to nutritious food and the hope of a brighter future. To all our volunteers and supporters, thank you for being the heart of our mission to end hunger in Toronto.

Make a difference today by donating to Daily Bread Food Bank and supporting emergency food programs across the city.
