Volunteer researchers needed for Who’s Hungry 2025

Volunteer researchers are needed to conduct surveys with Toronto food bank clients about their experiences with food insecurity. The results of this survey inform the annual Who’s Hungry report, which is used to advocate for solutions to end hunger and poverty in our city. 

We are looking for volunteers to conduct surveys at Toronto food banks in March and April 2025. In this role, volunteers can expect to learn best practices in research, receive training on conducting the survey, learn about food insecurity, build professional connections, and gain experience in the field. 

Duties: 

  • Attend a two-hour virtual training session 
  • Conduct one-on-one surveys with food bank clients on a range of issues 
  • Commit to a minimum of three shifts (each shift lasts three to four hours in a food bank). Most shifts take place Monday-Friday between 9:00am – 5:00pm, but there may be some evening and weekend shifts available. 

Skills/qualifications needed: 

  • At least 18 years of age 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Fluency in English language 
  • Must be able to collect data from food banks located in any of the following regions: Central Toronto, Etobicoke, Scarborough 

Helpful skills and additional assets (i.e. “nice-to-haves”): 

  • Fluency in at least one additional language (e.g. Ukrainian, Arabic, Mandarin, French, Spanish, Tamil, Hindi, Bengali) 
  • Previous experience in community-based research or front-line service delivery 
  • Empathetic understanding of the barriers faced by low-income populations
