As Canada began to feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in early March, food banks across the country immediately saw the urgent need for food rise. As businesses had to close down and lay-offs began to happen, millions of Canadians were faced with food insecurity.
On March 30, The Slaight Family Foundation announced an incredibly significant gift of $3 million to four organizations working towards food security all across Canada. This generous donation in response to COVID-19 will support vital food programs for Breakfast Clubs of Canada, Daily Bread Food Bank, Food Banks Canada and Second Harvest.
“The need has never been greater across the country,” says Neil Hetherington, CEO, Daily Bread Food Bank. “For decades the Slaight family name has been synonymous with philanthropic endeavors that have made the lives of hundreds of thousands of Canadians better. We at Daily Bread Food Bank are hopeful that many others across the country will follow the Slaight lead so the sting of poverty and hunger can be dulled.”
