Meet Jason, our Operations Manager at Daily Bread Food Bank. Since joining the team a little over three years ago, he’s been instrumental in helping to scale and streamline our operations in order to meet the growing demand for emergency food programs across Toronto.
What does a typical day look like in your role?
I manage about 25 staff, which means that the overarching duties associated with my role are overseeing the warehouse and our transportation fleet. I’m responsible for making sure our operations are running smoothly. In a typical day, that includes checking in on the teams to make sure they have everything they need, that we have enough staff on hand and that they’re set up for success, and ensuring that load out and delivery have gone well. I also run reporting, handle maintenance, and ensure that all of our operations are compliant.
What do you enjoy most about the work that you do?
It’s definitely knowing that I’m helping to service the community. I came to Canada as an immigrant many years ago, and I actually lived in this area. To know that I’m able to put my time and effort into helping the community has been so rewarding.
What has been your greatest professional achievement?
In the time that I’ve been with Daily Bread, volume has gone up by about 350%. And on average, our entire warehouse will get emptied in about 2 weeks’ time. The need has grown, but our space has stayed the same. We’ve had to work on a lot of efficiencies and become much more organized as a team. This has meant creating processes that allow us to work more efficiently and utilize the space more effectively so we can service more people. I’ve also been really proud of the fact that we’ve done a lot of hiring and bringing in team members with specialized skills. For example, we’ve brought in a lot of machine experts and strong drivers which has helped improve organization and workflow.
What made you decide to join the Daily Bread team?
I looked at the leadership of the organization, and I saw a group of people who were well-versed in various industries. I thought it would be great to have the opportunity to learn from them. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have such a meaningful job and to get to support the community in the way that we do as an organization.
What are some of your hobbies?
I have three kids who are all very busy, so a lot of my time is spent with them. But my son and I got into Rubik’s Cubes together, which has been really nice. I also love to play basketball.
What are people often surprised to learn about you?
That I like to draw and play music. I used to be an avid fish keeper, but with the kids I don’t do that as much anymore because it does take quite some time.
If you could be any animal, what would you be?
I think I identify most with a falcon. They fly and they’re fast – I used to ride a motorcycle and I’m also into sports cars, so I feel that connection.
Thank you, Jason, for your incredible dedication to supporting those experiencing food insecurity. We’re grateful for your passion and genuine care for helping others.
