On Friday, December 15, students from four schools across the GTA descended on Daily Bread’s production hall with the goal of seeing which school could sort the most non-perishable food donations to help neighbours experiencing hunger this holiday season.
The school challenge was held as part of CBC’s Sounds of the Season, a month-long fundraiser in support of food banks across the GTA.
Students from Charminade College School, Beaumonde Heights Junior Middle School, Sherwood Heights School – Erin Mills Campus and Kleinburg Public School all took part in the food sort.
The students, joined by CBC personalities, including Fresh Air host Ismaila Alfa, news anchor Chris Glover, the host of Ontario Morning, Ramraajh Sharvendrian and the ever-vivacious reporter, Kevin Carrington, rolled up their sleeves to sort and pack food donations going out to Daily Bread’s 132 member agencies across the city.
Driven by the holiday spirit, the group of 60 children sorted 7,595 pounds of non-perishable food items, representing a week’s worth of food for 692 clients.
Students not only had the chance to offer hands-on support, they also gained insight into the growing food insecurity crisis and why it is important that everyone has emergency access to food.
“We learned about donating food in class, but when you get here and you see how much food there is, you realize how many people need food. It’s incredibly sad to hear that you [Daily Bread] are spending $22 million to purchase food every year, but there are still food shortages,” says Uswa, Student – Beaumonde Heights Junior Middle School.
We are so grateful to all the students, teachers and CBC staff members who contributed to this incredible day of community and learning and supported our vison to end hunger in our city.
