Member Agency Food Sort

Leaders from our member agencies work tirelessly to run food banks, dish out hot meals or deliver snacks to schools. But on Monday, they volunteered to roll up their sleeves and fight hunger in yet another way — at our first Member Agency Food Sort since before the pandemic.

I’m here today to be part of the positive movement of supporting and helping those in need,” said D. L. Banton, Executive Director of Syme Woolner Neighbourhood & Family Center. “As much as Daily Bread gives to many of us, how about I help give a bit, too. It’s my way of saying thank you.”

The agency volunteers included workers from one of the three busiest food banks in our network, executive directors of community organizations, passionate church groups and coordinators who support people leaving incarceration. Their collective efforts enabled us to get 2,776 pounds of blueberry granola, fresh broccoli and community donations out to Torontonians living with food insecurity.

“We’re enjoying what we’re doing, helping so our brothers and sisters can have food on the table,” said Fayth Lennon, Food Bank Coordinator at Mount Olive Food Bank. “For us it’s a pleasure. We love to treat people the way we’d like to be treated.”

Many agency volunteers had visited Daily Bread before for our annual general meetings or training sessions, but few had had the opportunity to volunteer on-site and see the organization’s inner workings.

“It’s my first time being in a food bank facility so it’s nice to see how it operates,” said Crystal Davis, Institutional Coordinator at John Howard Society of Toronto.

We thank these agency representatives not only for volunteering with us, but for everything they do in the fight to end hunger in Toronto. We’re lucky to partner with so many amazing organizations across the city to make sure everyone can access the food they need.
