For the past fifteen years, Walmart Canada and The Walmart Foundation have been supporting Daily Bread Food Bank in the fight to end hunger. Whether through financial or food donations, or on-site volunteering in our warehouse and kitchen, Walmart’s support has been invaluable in our efforts to meet the ever-growing need in our city.
In 2018, The Walmart Foundation was instrumental in the launch of Daily Bread’s Farm to Food Bank program through a financial grant of close to $1M, as part of their commitment to food waste prevention. Our Farm to Food Bank program works directly with farmers across Ontario to provide food-insecure communities with access to fresh, nutritious and locally-grown produce, while at the same time helping the environment by diverting naturally imperfect produce from being discarded to landfills.
Each week, Daily Bread trucks pick up 65,000 lbs of fresh produce (more than 40 types of fruits and vegetables!) from farms across the province, which are then sorted, packed and distributed to 189 food programs across the city.
Through the above-mentioned grant, an energy-efficient, state-of-the-art cooler and freezer spanning 4,600 square feet was installed in the Daily Bread warehouse, increasing our capacity to store fresh and frozen, nutrient-dense foods such as produce, dairy and protein by four times.
In addition to Farm to Food Bank, Walmart Canada also holds an in-store, point-of-purchase campaign called Fight Hunger. Spark Change, which raises close to $100,000 annually. And as part of employee engagement, Walmart teams regularly volunteer on-site at our warehouse, helping to sort and pack food donations, and preparing soups and casseroles in our kitchen.
This year, Walmart Canada has made a $100,000 donation to Daily Bread Food Bank, to help address the growing need due to the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis. These critical funds will help to support our growing network of member agencies, new food programs and food purchasing, so that our neighbours can always access the food they need.
