Feed Ontario honoured both Daily Bread Food Bank and our CEO, Neil Hetherington, at the RISE Up Conference awards ceremony held earlier this week.
Daily Bread won the Advocacy Award, which is presented to a food bank that has been a “strong advocate for long-term hunger-relief in their community through excellence in research, government relations, or community organizing.”
The award recognized our advocacy efforts calling for a fully funded Canada Disability Benefit. This digital advocacy campaign, in partnership with 40+ organizations across the country, reached 1.43 million Canadians and resulted in 140,000 letters sent to Members of Parliament.
Additionally, our CEO, Neil Hetherington, received one of two Achievement Awards, which are given to individuals who have “made outstanding contributions to their community, the food banking sector, or to raising awareness of the issues surrounding food insecurity.”
Neil is a passionate advocate and thought leader in poverty-reduction and food-insecurity issues. In recent years he has testified before House of Commons standing committees, deputed before Toronto budget committees, and met with representatives from all levels of government to advocate for the human right to food and for long-term solutions to end poverty.
We are honoured by these recognitions and humbled to be in such good company. Congratulations to this year’s other award winners: Barrie Food Bank, North York Harvest Food Bank, UHC – Hub of Opportunities, and Dan Xilon (Sudbury Food Bank).
