Client spotlight: Areeb

For Areeb, food banks played a critical role in providing short-term relief while he focused on getting back on his feet. After graduating from college, Areeb finally landed his dream job working in the food supply chain industry. Sadly, just a year later, he lost his job due to cutbacks. “I was heartbroken, and because I had only been working one year, I didn’t have much money saved.”

With only a small severance and employment insurance payments that barely covered rent, Areeb quickly found himself struggling to afford food. That’s when he turned to a local food bank for support.

“For three or four months, the food bank helped me get through one of the most difficult times of my life,” Areeb says. “It gave me stability so I could focus on rebuilding my career without the constant stress of worrying about my next meal.” Having access to nutritious food, including proteins like meat, made a huge difference.

Now, Areeb has a stable job and a renewed sense of purpose. Grateful for the support he received, he’s committed to giving back. “I plan to help sort food at the food bank and give back in any way I can.”

Although employment ensured Areeb no longer needed to rely on food banks, that isn’t always the case. According to Who’s Hungry 2024, 51% of new food bank clients have someone in their household who is employed—showing that even those with jobs are struggling to afford food.

Areeb said his own experiences gave him a new perspective on the severity of food insecurity overall. “It opened my eyes to how important community supports are. It made me more empathetic to others going through tough times. People shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for help—it’s there for a reason.”
