It was another remarkable year for CBC Toronto Sounds of the Season. Starting on November 20 and running until December 31, 2019 this campaign raised a record-breaking $839,137 and 18,559 lbs of food to help support our neighbours experiencing hunger and food insecurity.
The annual CBC Open House, a Toronto tradition, was held on December 6. Matt Galloway and the Metro Morning team kicked things off bright and early with incredible live performances from Barenaked Ladies, Donovan Woods, Odario and many more! Guests attending the open house were able to enjoy all-day programming, meet and greet their favourite CBC personalities, and had the opportunity to make an impact by donating food and funds.
In addition, the annual School Food Sort Challenge was held at Daily Bread Food Bank on December 13. Over 100 students from six schools across the GTA joined forces to help our neighbours in need and competed to raise funds and food, and to sort and pack food donations that went out to our member agencies throughout the month of December. It was an amazing display of leadership, commitment and passion. We are grateful to all the participating students, teachers and of course, our CBC team captains.
One of the most important elements of this annual campaign is capturing the stories of individuals who are currently, or have in the past, experienced food insecurity and crushing myths surrounding who is impacted by hunger and why.
We heard stories from single parents currently using a food bank and from families and individuals who have lived through food insecurity and were able to get through difficult periods thanks to the supports offered by food banks. We heard from Sangyé Chöga Martin, Daily Bread’s Food Program Coordinator, who has experienced food insecurity and now manages our on-site food bank and supports others who are living in need.
We would like to extend deep gratitude to everyone who shared their story. With their voices, they helped others in the most meaningful way. And thank you CBC for amplifying those voices and raising awareness and much needed funds.
At Daily Bread, we believe that food is a human right and no one should go hungry or face barriers in accessing food. On behalf of our member agencies and the thousands of individuals served through our programs, THANK YOU to everyone involved in making Sounds of the Season 2019 such a success. You have impacted the lives of thousands across the city.
