Located in Downtown Toronto near Bathurst and Adelaide, Evangel Hall Mission has been providing services to their community since 1913. Throughout the year they offer a variety of services including assistance with housing, dental services, drop-in, financial trusteeship and spiritual/emotional care. They seek to create a safe space providing holistic support for individuals experiencing poverty and homelessness.
Like many programs across our network, COVID-19 severely impacted the way Evangel Hall had traditionally been able to deliver their services. Recognizing that their community members needed access to these essential services more then ever, they came up with new ways of delivering their programs.
Currently they serve approximately 200 take out meals per day, with participants receiving their meals at the door in order to adhere to lockdown restrictions and public health guidelines.
However, drop in Manager, Philomena Lee understands the importance of fostering community, and reducing social isolation, noting how difficult and isolating the pandemic has been for many of their community members.
“Folks don’t have access to all the same services they had before, and many don’t have internet access so accessing computers and WiFi is critical. That, and being able to provide people spiritual and emotional support has helped our community greatly.” Philomena Lee, Drop-in Manager, Evangel Hall Mission
With this in mind, they have been able to welcome a limited number of community members into their drop in space, giving people some respite and a chance to watch TV, play games, and take part in other activities. They also have access to laundry, showers, and health services on site.
Thank you to Philomena and the entire team at Evangel Hall Mission for continuing to provide care and support to your community!
