Daily Bread Food Bank has launched a series of Summer Produce Markets to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables directly to families and individuals in underserved communities in Scarborough and Etobicoke.
In partnership with Toronto Community Housing Corporation and with the support of generous Farm to Food Bank partners, the goal of these farmer-style markets is to facilitate low-income communities’ right to food, providing a low-barrier way for individuals in need to access fresh, healthy produce at their front door.
Individuals like Sylvie, a 56 year old client at Daily Bread’s on-site food bank. Sylvie has had to rely on food banks over the years to support her family.
Currently on Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), Sylvie shares that most of her cheque goes towards paying rent, leaving very little left for food and utilities.
“I am so grateful to the produce donors, volunteers and staff who make this happen. The abundance of food [at the market] is simply amazing.”
In addition to the distribution of fresh, healthy food, Daily Bread’s Summer Produce Markets provide access for individuals who may be facing other difficulties, such as mobility issues, isolation, mental health challenges, dietary restrictions, or those who are simply unable to afford public transportation to get to a food bank or grocery store.
Thank you to our Farm to Food Bank partners for providing a nutritious and varied bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables for the community, and to Daily Bread’s committed and passionate volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure all food is distributed.
Summer Produce Markets run until September 28, 2019 and will serve close to 5,000 individuals in need.
