This year marked the 20th anniversary of Canstruction Toronto, an innovative competition that brings together students and professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering and design to build creative structures made entirely out of cans, all of which are then donated to Daily Bread Food Bank.
This year, 25 brilliant teams came together to “canstruct” out-of-the-box designs in the following categories: Best Original Design, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal and People’s Choice Award. Winners included “CANadian Moose”, “A Balanced Lunch Tray Keeps Hunger at Bay”, and an Honourable Mention for “Hunger CAN Gogh.”
At a time of year when public donations are low and the need is high, this year’s competition raised a record-breaking 68,785 lbs of food for our neighbours in need.
“Canstruction is an example of how brilliant minds can come to together to build community creatively, with energy and outstanding results,” says Daily Bread CEO, Neil Hetherington. “We are grateful to everyone involved in this innovative event for using their skills to fight hunger in our city.”
