On Family Day weekend, over 200 dedicated volunteers came together to make a difference at Daily Bread Food Bank, sorting an incredible 38,000 pounds of food donations. Their hard work and commitment will help ensure that the more than one in ten Torontonians who rely on food banks have access to fresh, nutritious food.
Volunteers of all ages, including parents, children, and friends, gathered to capture the spirit of Family Day. For Seema, a food sort volunteer, the day was not only an opportunity to spend quality time with her family but also a chance to impart a valuable lesson to her daughter. “For me, it’s really about teaching my daughter, Venya, the importance of supporting the community.”
This food sort comes at a critical time, as food bank usage in Toronto reaches unprecedented levels. In 2024 alone, Daily Bread member food banks saw more than 3.75 million visits—an alarming 26% increase from the previous year.
“With the rising cost of living, far too many people in our city are struggling to live with dignity and realize their right to food,” says Neil Hetherington, CEO of Daily Bread Food Bank. “While we continue to advocate for stronger social safety nets and long-term solutions to end food insecurity, we are deeply grateful to our community of supporters for taking action today to help those in need.”
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who spent their Family Day weekend giving back. Your efforts helped support the fight to end hunger and build a stronger, more food-secure city.
