At Daily Bread Food Bank, we often talk about the power of community. But this long weekend, we’re celebrating another important connection: family. Richard and Helena, a brother-and-sister duo working at Daily Bread, embody the strength and support that comes from working together for a shared cause.
Richard, who leads Daily Bread’s pick team in the warehouse, and Helena, who is relief staff at our on-site New Toronto Street Food Bank, grew up in a close-knit family, where they learned the value of supporting one another. Family game nights and shared celebrations built a foundation of connection that now extends into their professional lives. Now, working together at Daily Bread adds new meaning to their bond.
“It’s fun to see each other during the day,” Helena shares. “Even though we’re in different departments, knowing that we’re both contributing to the same mission is really nice.”
Richard echoes her sentiment: “Seeing Helena thrive in her role motivates me. It’s not just about the work we do individually—it’s about knowing we’re both part of something bigger, working toward the same goal.”
Their mutual encouragement has shaped both their journeys at Daily Bread. Helena initially joined the organization after Richard suggested she volunteer. “I was hesitant at first,” she says. “I wasn’t sure if I was strong enough to volunteer in the warehouse, but Richard kept encouraging me to try volunteering in other departments. Once I started, I loved it.” Now, they’re inspiring their younger sister to get involved, hoping to continue the family tradition.
For Richard and Helena, their work at Daily Bread isn’t just a job—it’s a source of pride for their entire family. “When Richard got his promotion, we all celebrated together,” Helena says. “Our parents tell everyone how proud they are of us. It’s rewarding to know that we’re not only making an impact on the community but also making our family proud.”
This Family Day, Richard and Helena remind us of the strength that comes from working together—not just as colleagues, but as family. Their story is a testament to how shared purpose can deepen bonds and create lasting change for the more than one in ten Torontonians relying on food banks for emergency food access.
