On October 19, Daily Bread Food Bank joined forces with Purolator and the Toronto Argonauts for the third annual Tackle Hunger game.
Staff members and volunteers were stationed at each gate of BMO Field to collect food and funds, while Purolator set up a truck and tent at Gate 1 so that fans who made donations could have a photo op with the Grey Cup. Throughout the game, a QR code appeared on the jumbotron for any fans who wanted to donate through a virtual platform.
Just before kickoff, Neil Hetherington, CEO at Daily Bread Food Bank, took to the field to help perform the coin toss. Neil went back out at the start of the third quarter for the final donation tally alongside Purolator’s Wayne Squire. They were joined by Mark and Ruth Schultz, who represented Chris Schultz, the former Tackle Hunger campaign ambassador until his passing in 2021.
Argos Nation raised over 21,000 pounds of food at the game — a campaign record! Fans also enjoyed a victory, with the team beating the Ottawa Redblacks 38-31 to clinch second place in the East.
Thank you to Purolator and the Argos for their partnership in helping provide food to families experiencing hunger across Toronto. We’re incredibly grateful for the extra spotlight they bring to the issue of food insecurity.
