The tidal wave of food bank use that Toronto has experienced since the onset of the pandemic has transformed the city’s food charity sector.
It has forced us to rise — to deliver more food, open more food banks, and advocate louder for change — so that we can bear the brunt of the wave before it crashes on our shores.
It has also demanded an updated strategy for our organization. We needed a new plan and objectives that reflected this unprecedented scale of need.
That was the genesis behind our strategic goals for 2024-2027. What leaps forward can we make in the next three years to advance our vision of a hunger-free Toronto?
We’ve set our sights high. But we know that with this community of supporters, we can accomplish these goals. We thank you for standing hand in hand with us as we fight hunger in our city together. Now let’s get to work.
We distributed 38.4 million pounds of food over the last fiscal year, which was over 10 million pounds more than the year prior. As food bank visits climb, we know we will need to distribute even more food around the city, and so we will increase our capacity to do so.
We will develop and execute a member agency growth strategy, enhance our operational support relationship with our agencies, and gain a clearer understanding of new clients’ chronic food bank usage.
To make food bank use rare, brief, and non-recurring, we must target policy initiatives that will have a positive effect on chronic food bank use. We will invest in research that will help us gain a clearer understanding of new users’ chronic food bank use and mobilize the community to advance policy changes that reduce it.
We will achieve our annual financial and food-raising goals. We will ensure that Daily Bread is the place passionate, diverse, and values-driven people join and stay to enact change.
We will improve client accessibility to network services by providing soft-skill accessibility training and ensuring that 100% of our member agencies understand their legal obligations to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
