The demand across Daily Bread member food banks reached a record high in the month of June, with 171,631 client visits. Pre-pandemic, the average visits per month was approximately 65,000 for the same period. In addition, 8,000 new clients made use of food emergency food bank services.
Neil Hetherington, CEO, Daily Bread Food Bank, spoke to CTV News about this unprecedented demand, and the need for government policies to end poverty – the root cause of hunger and food insecurity in our city.
“The problem is systemic,” Neil says. “It deals with a lack of affordable housing, a lack of income security and incomes that are simply not keeping pace with inflation.”
